Leather youth baseball mitts have been around for a long time. If you’ve been to Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, you may have seen some unusual looking antique mitts and wondered how they could have caught a baseball with them. For those of us old timers who have been around long enough to actually use some of those old mitts, we can tell you that it would not be easy. They were stiff, heavy, clumsy, and tough to manipulate with their hand when they were new, and it was not much before they wore out a tender group of skin that often left the ball fly right through it. Catching was an art, and stingy fingers and bruised shins were all part of the experience of playing youth baseball.

With those stiff or loose youth baseball mitts, you would wonder why kids did not give up on the game. Well, the truth is, many youths would not play baseball or give up for that same reason. They did not want to have any part of trying to catch a hot, bobbling grounder on uneven ground. Kids are the same way today. If it is too unpleasant to use the equipment and play the game the way it is meant to be played, then you might think, “Why bother?”

New baseball mitts and new materials

Manufacturers have designed many mitts today so they are ready play with. Instead of the stiff, thick cowhide leather that makes up the entire mitt, modern youthbaseball mitts are made from numerous materials including pigskin. Cowhide can be used where most are needed, but these gloves are designed for comfort and performance. They almost feel like they can catch the ball themselves.

Youth baseball mitts design is done with child hand eye coordination and physical skills in mind. The physical ability of an adult means that adult mitts can be made differently depending on the nature of the position they play, and with more straps to enable them to trap baseballs a little more easily. The dexterity and strength of a child’s finger are not fully developed, so they will not be able to use a glove with the ability of an older youth or adult ball player. There are gloves for the young tots, something that could not be done decades ago.

Today’s youth baseball mitts provide additional helpful features, such as antimicrobial treatments, which keep bacteria in the bay. It is hot in the summer and your child’s hand will sweat inside the mitts.
